The Government policy that all healthcare professionals have indemnity insurance has been on hold for several years, pending an enquiry. That enquiry, the Finlay Scott Review began last year and has now been published, and recommends that indemnity insurance should become mandatory for all healthcare professionals, and be a requirement for registration.
As independent midwives are included in the group of ‘those for whom the market does not provide affordable insurance or indemnity’, the Departments of Health will decide if this service is necessary, and if so, devise a way of overcoming this issue.
If the Departments of Health fail to see the necessity of independent midwifery, then there is a chance that it will become illegal in the near future. If you see the value in personalised, high quality, independent midwifery care, then we need your help in alerting the Government to this need.
If you agree that it would be terrible to lose this choice, please could you send an email to your MP and copy it to the relevant Department of Health (follow the ‘read more’ link for more information), and also print and send a hard copy? We have drafted a letter here which you are welcome to use.
