In this first video of our series, Katharine talks to Jo and Matt about why they chose to deliver their second baby using hypnobirthing techniques from the Hypnobirthing Centre.

Katharine: Tell me how you found hypnobirthing and why you decided to do it and what you thought of it?

Jo: We or I had my first son in the Andover birth centre and it was very straightforward but not, there was not any control was there?

Matt: No we felt a bit hopeless really. We are both quite controlling people in our lives with regards to work and home life and that kind of thing, and we had complete lack of control, we pass over all control to perceived professionals and it was a bit worrying at the time, although it all went ok.

Jo: It was fine but for me there was no, I had no control over my body or what I expected and nobody had I suppose had prepared me for it other than the books and going to the Midwife and them saying ‘oh yea it is going to hurt have some gas and air’

Katharine: They give you the facts.

Jo: Yes and nobody said it would be this process and they only said this is what happens first and then you are in the final stages of labour nobody said look for these signs as with hypnobirthing that point where you think I can’t do this and actually that’s the precursor that says you are nearly there. So I googled hypnobirthing and you were one that kept coming up – the hypnobirthing guru. So then I think we phoned you and booked to come on one of the courses and that was I think 3 months before.

Matt: I think we were about 5 to 6 months gone.

Katharine: It was in March wasn’t it?

Matt: It was yes.

Jo: Yes.

Katharine: And when was she born.

Jo and Matt: She was born end of July.

Katharine: So it was just a good time before.

Jo: Really good, it was really really good and gave us loads of time to work through the book and do the exercises and just I suppose mentally prepare really. Even from the first session with you we did come back and think thank goodness.
