The Guardian Newspaper recent article
July 13, 2009 – 11:37 amI have just read a very interesting article on the Guardian Newspaper online about “It is good for women to suffer the pain of a natural birth, says medical chief” As you can imagine with an article title like this it has got a considerable number of comments, a number of them from quite annoyed women.
It discusses the huge rise in epidural and how medicalized modern day birth has become. It also stresses the benefits that both and mother and their baby can have from enjoying a natural birth and how processes such as hypnobirthing can help this happen.
What it does fail to do is place the concept of birth and motherhood in an arena which a Mum to be can embrace and look forward to. No women wants to ‘embrace a new “working with pain” approach’ and the concept that ‘Pain prepares women for the demands of motherhood’ is something akin to attitudes from a bygone era.
But the positive side is that introduces alterntatives for women from the standard hospital birth with an epidural. There is still too much dwelling on the PAIN aspect. It does not have to be like this if you are fully aware of what to expect and have techniques to help you enjoy your birth. Yes that is right - it can be enjoyable!
